Music Video Monday: TMNT

Posted by

Yep, that’s right.  We’re kicking off another theme week here at PopRewind.com.  This one will probably hit home with the majority of our readers (based on your user icons): Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Week.  So, let’s take a look at the musical side of the four green heroes.

“Turtle Power” by Partners in Kryme:

Some bits of this are borderline NSFW, but also incredibly ridiculous.

This 1989 hit came in at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. I like to think that the video is the party the Turtles threw for themselves after they defeated the Shredder in the movie. Oops, was that a spoiler for a 25 year old movie? Yes, you really are in your 30s now, that much time has passed, and you still love this song.

Coming Out of Their Shells:

Why does this exist? Because they don’t sell pizza in record stores, dudes!

Pizza Hut was on a role with movie tie-ins for a while. Despite Domino’s being the Turtles’ pizza of choice in the first movie, Pizza Hut jumped on the opportunity to make their pies synonymous with bad TMNT merchandise. Even as a kid, I was baffled by the cassette tape that came with my large cheese pizza and souvenir cup. Looking at the spindle of tape inside the cassette, I don’t think I ever made it past the first song.

Turtle Tunes:

“It was a disaster” and “this is making me sick” seem cries for help from the writers regarding this project.

Unfortunately, there was another TMNT music attempt, this time in the form of a cheesy singalong video. You know, rap songs about the Turtles seem cool. Parodies of “Yankee Doodle”, not so much.

“Ninja Rap” by Vanilla Ice:

So, maybe not every rap tune about turtles is destined to be a radio classic…

Speaking of rap songs about Ninja Turtles, here’s the Vanilla Ice tune you sang on the playground for weeks after first seeing the second movie.  According to a Wikipedia article that took me all of ten seconds to read, the Ice Man himself considered this to be one of the highlights of his career.

Enjoy these videos this week!  More TMNT fun to come.  Oh, and in true turtle fashion, let’s end on this note:

  • Lots of TMNT fans hate on the Vanilla Ice appearance in Secret of the Ooze. Not me! The 90’s icon is iconic in that film. It’s totally fitting to have him mingling with dudes in rubber suits.

  • TheSewerDen Can’t really imagine the movie without that scene.
