Pop Culture League: House of Wax

Posted by

This week’s assignment is in for the Pop Culture League and since it’s the first week of school (according to everyone ever on Facebook posting photos of their kids’ first day), we figured we’d better not eff this up.

House of Wax: The local Wax Museum is having a fire sale and you have the opportunity to add a life-size, life-like action figure to your collection. Who do you choose?

Linz:

Well, I can tell you that I won’t be picking any spooky/Halloween-related wax figures…

Years before I ever saw Waxwork, I was on vacation with my family. The “dungeon” portion of the wax museum we went to freaked me the eff out, so my dad led me through it while I closed my eyes. To my defense, I was probably about eight years old.

What would I take, since that’s the actual assignment and all? I’m sure it’s no surprise: Conan O’Brien!

Maybe that is a surprise. I just googled “Rick Moranis wax figure” and had no results. Honestly, that’s probably a good thing considering my eBay history. He’d only end up melting in the crate on his way to me. Wow that’s a weird thing to type.

Lee:

Look, only one name came to mind and that’s Rod Serling. I’d keep his waxy figure in a shadowy corner of a room. When the moonlight through the window would hit him just right, it’s almost as if a cigarette were lighting up and a speech was starting. Picture if you will, how amazing this would be.

Hey, speaking of the genius behind The Twilight Zone, were you aware that the Tower of Terror Twilight Zone ride at Disneyland is being closed? Yeah, it’s true. Despite the show proving to be timeless and even a popular classic on streaming services where it is accessible to people of all ages perhaps more than ever, the Mouse has decided to close what many consider to be the best example of Imagineering. Don’t worry, I mean, it’s not TOTALLY going away. They’re re-themeing it to Guardians of the Galaxy, you know, another franchise that has totally stood the test of time for decades… oh.

Well, now you know. Go get your last rides in at the California location. The Florida version is still going strong… for now!

And, uh, yeah, team Rod Serling waxman!

Elsewhere in the Pop Culture League…

The Toy Box gets a little crafty and resourceful.

Green Plastic Squirt Gun makes a pretty sexy pick!

Collector’s Universe has a few nostalgia-riffic ideas in mind.

Mr. Smith’s Plastic Bubble makes some space for a super hero.

20 Years Before 2000 has a super hybrid pick!

AFB has a list we can get behind– especially Sonic!
