Retro News: Dr. Pepper Gum Gloriously Returns

Posted by

For the love of all that’s cowabunga, they brought back Dr. Pepper gum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! …sort of… well, close enough

It’s been mentioned a few times on this site that Dr. Pepper gum was one of my favorite treats growing up.  The pieces were gigantic and filled with sticky goop.  I never thought it tasted like the soda, but it was delicious just the same.  Unfortunately, the gum was discontinued and only survived as vague memories and legends on the Internet.

That is until today when a package of Hubba Bubba Dr. Pepper flavored gum practically landed in my lap.  Before biting in to a piece, I already assumed there was no gooey center since an exploding piece of gum was not depicted on the package.  The shape of the pieces in the Hubba Bubba pack were more standard gum bricks instead of the Halls-shaped Dr. Pepper gum of the past.

As you can see from the picture, I’ve already put quite a dent in the package.

Even just opening the package lifted this powdery aroma all over the air.  For just one brief moment, I smelled my childhood again, floating in front of me.  Honestly, I could have been satisfied enough at having this stuff smell exactly like I remembered.  The good news is, it actually tasted exactly like I remembered, too!  Not at all like actual Dr. Pepper.  Or Diet Dr. Pepper.  Or Dublin Dr. Pepper.  Or Heritage Dr. Pepper.  Or even Dr. Zipp or Dr. B.  But, hey, it still tastes pretty good.

One aspect that catches my tastes buds by surprise, though, comes when blowing bubbles.  Instead of inhaling some Dr. Pepper fumes down my throat, it has a slight hint of that flavor you catch when blowing up a beach ball.  Not really sure what to make of that one.

So, chew on this exciting news and consider yourself informed!  Still no word on if the Cherry 7-Up gum is returning.  Considering they ruined the formula for the soda a few years back, I’m not getting my hopes up.  In fact, I think it’s more likely that we would see DNL return before we see Cherry 7-Up gum resurged.

Surge… see, what I did there?

  • I’ve never cared for Dr. Pepper but glad to see stuff like this make a comeback, even if I am a little jealous it’s something YOU liked and not the Sodalicious Fruit Snacks I keep praying for.
