Saturday Morning Recap: Vol. 12

Posted by

Remember when Saturday mornings were worth getting up for? While we can’t provide a four-hour block of programming, here’s some retro news you may have missed (or simply want to revisit) from the past week.

Saturday Morning TV:

Here’s a great episode of the Real Ghostbusters that seems a bit forgotten to time. The guys face-off against the big red guy on a game show. Totally appropriate Saturday morning television!

Finally, a completely needed reboot… wait… no.

It seems like every week we ask ourselves, “What will they reboot next?” And every week they surprise us with something more outlandish than the last. This week? We learned of the Leprechaun reboot– Leprechaun: Origins, coming to VOD on August 26 and home video on September 5.

Dumb and Dumber To is a thing. For realz. Did Jim Carey get his teeth fixed and then broken again for this role? A+ to him.

HOLD THE PHONE. Sonic the Hedgehog is coming to a theatre near you! This seems to be part of a series of films that will be a hybrid of live-action and CG-animation. Hey, it can’t be any worse than the Super Mario Bros. movie.

Turkey-Related Jim Henson Projects:

Jim Henson and Jerry Juhl’s unproduced Thanksgiving-themed The Musical Monsters of Turkey Hollow is coming to a television and comic book store near you. Totally excited to see how this goes!

The Seattle Symphony got together with Six Mix-A-Lot and, yes, they did go there.  The mix maestro invited ladies to rush the stage and shake it while a full orchestral version of “Baby Got Back” took the audience to new sonic heights.

While Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughtta Know” may not be about Uncle Joey after all, we all know “Weird Al” had his influence on “Ironic”.  Which is ironic… or maybe coincidence.  I never could figure out this riddle.

Cassette Store Day is a thing, and from the amount of cassettes Lee and Linz still have, they could run it out of the basement.

Video Games:

Guess who’s in the new Super Smash Bros. game for the WiiU and Nintendo 3DS! Go on, GUESS! Or, watch the video. You know. Whatever.

And while Super Smash Bros. isn’t out or finished yet, have to fear– Conan is helping Nintendo out with some stellar suggestions.

We were waiting for the classic door opening sound and – SPOILER ALERT – we were not disappointed.

Doom. It’s back. In PS4/Xbox One/PC form. This is looking way swankier that the Doom we knew and loved. Wonder what WADs will be available for it?

Weekly Bill Murray Spotting:

A wild Bill Murray appears in a couple’s engagment photo shoot.

In Case You Missed It:

It was Ghostbusters week here at!  We brought you four articles of Ghostbusters goodness, in addition to this edition’s cartoon.

First up, we served some fun-filled Ghostbusters tunes on this week’s Music Video Monday.

Then, we launched right into a post featuring awesome homemade Slimer bathroom decor.

As if that weren’t enough, we relived the good times of our youth with a round of Real Ghostbusters toy commercials.

Finally, some delicious spooky snacks came along in the form of another Retro Recipe set where we made some Ecto-Guac and Psychomagnotheric Slime Cocktails.

Rediscover the 80s’ Weekly Links provides even more can’t-miss news!

Sadly, comedian and actor Rik Mayall passed away on June 9 at the age of 56. Linz enjoyed Mayall’s performances in Bottom and Young Ones, but if you didn’t have access to BBC programming growing up, you’ll likely remember him as Drop Dead Fred. Either way, it’s a tremendous loss.
