Saturday Morning Recap: Vol. 5

Remember when Saturday mornings were worth getting up for? While we can’t provide a four-hour block of programming, here’s some retro news you may have missed (or simply want to revisit) from the past week.

Saturday’s Cartoon:

In honor of the Nintendo Game Boy turning 25 years old this week, we thought to offer you a look back at the half-hour commercial that used to run every Saturday under the guise Captain N: The Game Master. Unfortunately, the introduction of Game Boy as a character is when the show officially jumped the shark.

Movies:

More news on the Goonies sequel! Will this happen? Who knows, but apparently Steven Spielberg came up with the story line.

Seems like things are coming together for the Jem Movie. A teaser poster has been released and some main cast members have been announced. Minor roles have been announced as well– the above video shows some fans that will be playing what sounds like bit parts and extras in the film. Also, the role of Zipper (Eric Raymond’s thug buddy) was cast.

No.
Not one to be out-done by the Truly Outrageous Jem and the Holograms, Barbie is slated to get her own live-action comedy film at the end of the year. Our predictions? Barbie and the Rockers.

If the Goosebumps movies doesn’t use the TV show theme, I’m not interested.
Moviegoers beware: you’re in for a scare.  Okay, so that doesn’t have quite the same ring to it, but you should be aware that the Goosebumps movie started filming this week.  In opposite fashion of the release schedules of the books, the movie will take a few years to be released.  Too bad that R.L. Stine movie based on his The Beast books never came to light.

Finally, the trailer for Boyhood dropped this week.  This counts as nostalgia news since production began in 2002 to showcase a boy’s progression to adult hood.  The trailer clearly hints as some moments to make you cry, so bring the tissues if you see this one.

Anime:

Fingers crossed for Saban Moon Crystal! Wait, no!

The Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal anime’s main cast will be announced on April 27, and the anime itself is still slated to premier in July 2014. As long as it’s not Saban Moon, I’m all for it.

Animation:

Hulu’s The Doozers (as in, those work-focused building-structures-with-radishes little fellows from Fraggle Rock) premiered on Friday. To U.S. viewers only. I’d tell you how awesome the trailer is, but it’s the Canadian of this site writing this paragraph 🙁  [U.S. Editor note: It looks like every Mario Kart trailer from the last decade.]

Video Games:

It’s been announced that a Major League Gaming arena is going to break ground in China.  When searching for a relevant news link, my Google search first recommended MLG with no mention of MLB anywhere.  I guess that’s this week’s reality check!  This Businessweek article refers to it as a theme park.  Perhaps, we’ll get another Sonic the Hedgehog roller coaster.

In Case You Missed It:

MusicVideoMondaysTitle_001

In this week’s episode of Music Video Mondays, we took a look back at a few hits from Wham!  No, not the vegetarian-ham-substance.  Wham! was a band from the 80s.  *sigh*

To swing things back to Game Boy, we also celebrated the little gray brick’s birthday with an article focusing on must-have accessories and another one on weird commercials.  Be there or be square!

Then we took a look at some radical commercials for the original Game Boy. Ooooh the 90s.
