Remember when Saturday mornings were worth getting up for? While we can’t provide a four-hour block of programming, here’s some retro news you may have missed (or simply want to revisit) from the past week.
One of the best, or one of the worst, things about cartoons in the 80s and 90s is that everyone got one. Of course, the stars of the cartoon rarely did their own voices– save for Super Dave! Today we’re watching Super Dave: Daredevil for Hire.
Obligatory E.T. Commentary:
So it seems like we’re obliged to mention the whole E.T. dig thing. We’re both very skeptical about this. Largely, the coverage focuses on the E.T. games that were unearthed in a New Mexico landfill. OMG THE RUMORS ARE TRUE. Or are they? Workers dug up E.T. carts pretty quickly after arriving, digging in the exact right spot. Apparently a large number of games that weren’t E.T. were also found, but that’s ignored. We’re taking this one with a grain of salt since it seems to be a publicity stunt for the upcoming documentary: Dumping the Alien: Unearthing the Atari Graveyard.
Sailor Moon Crystal has a release date… and inner senshi designs have been revealed! Squeal like a girl! I predict that on July 5, Linz will lose her mind and watch Sailor Moon surrounded by her Sailor Moon action figures while drinking out of these Japanese drinking glasses and eating delicious canned pasta
Holy 1992, Batman! There’s a new Wolfenstein game! And yes, we now realize there were other Wolfenstein games after the much-loved and much-ported Wolfenstein 3D, but we didn’t know that prior to starting this paragraph and dammit, we’re committed. This is much more graphic than I remember.
Nintendo released a pretty awesome video to announce they aren’t doing a press conference at E3, but they are doing a Super Smash Bros. Invitational. That is some Nintendo World Championships shiz right there.
Another Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie trailer is out and it looks very Michael Bay. Except for the Turtles, I’m not sure what they look like. Shrek? At least they’re not aliens?
YouTube stars Pomplamoose posted their take on Wham!’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go”. It starts off sounding like the Duck Tales theme. We aren’t clear if that’s a nod to the classic cartoon or pure coincidence. If you recall, we recently dedicated a Music Video Mondays post
Reality TV about Boy Bands and Boats:
Because everone ends up with a reality show (including Donnie Wahlberg already with Wahlburgers…) the rest of the New Kids on the Block are getting a reality show: Rock the Boat: New Kids on the Block
This reality show follows the ‘Kids on this year’s NKOTB cruise and will premiere in the 2014-2015 TVGN line-up. AW YEAH.
In Case You Missed It:
Music Video Mondays focused on Thomas Dolby.
Then we classed up the site with this list of 7 Inappropriate Toy Names.
Legendary actor Bob Hoskins left us this week, leaving behind his work in the timeless classic Who Framed Roger Rabbit
. He also left behind some great work in some not-so-great movies, such as Super Mario Bros.
I had Roger Rabbit bed sheets for years. If you haven’t picked up that movie on Blu-Ray, yet, now is an opportune time. The scene at the club will blow your mind in HD.
