Saturday Morning Recap: Vol. 9

Posted by

Remember when Saturday mornings were worth getting up for? While we can’t provide a four-hour block of programming, here’s some retro news you may have missed (or simply want to revisit) from the past week.

Saturday’s Cartoon:

We thought X-Men “Days of Future Past (Part I)” would be a fitting cartoon choice. Stay tuned next week for Part II to see how it all plays out! This was always a personal favorite episode here at PopRewind, so you can imagine how excited we are for the new movie!

What could be the plot to the fourth Jurassic Park movie, Jurassic World, popped up online. Potential spoiler: They be mixin’ dinosaur DNA. Sounds more like one of the Syfy Channel’s Shark-themed movies, but we’ll see how this pans out. It will be hard to top Ghost Shark, though, in all seriousness.

If she ends up with Blaine in this too, I’m gonna be pissed.

Molly Ringwald has been cast in the live-action Jem and the Holograms movie. Because there wasn’t enough 80s in the film, yet!

Warner Bros. officially titled the Batman-Superman pic Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, which makes us think this may be played out like an episode of Law & Order.  No word, yet, on Sam Waterston’s involvement.  We’ll keep you posted!

Remember that time you went to a sleepover and watched It and then didn’t sleep for two weeks? Well that’s going to happen again.

A trailer for Life Itself, a documentary about Roger Ebert’s career, dropped this week. Looks like the famous Benji argument will be in the movie!

Go to Chuck E. Cheese, I want to go to Chuck E. Cheese, I really want tooooooo.

Chuck E. Cheese’s Introduces Oculus Rift for Birthday Parties in Select Markets. We don’t need a virtual reality fake robot band; just bring back Rock-afire instead!

In a word we surely invented, a holimatronic Michael Jackson was unveiled in Las Vegas at the Billboard Music Awards this past weekend. There was some last-minute debate as to whether or not it was going to happen, but the uncanny valley performance was allowed to go forward and give an audience very mixed emotions. We’ve been enjoying the new album around here this week, as well.

All 200 uncut episodes of Sailor Moon are coming to DVD, Blu-Ray, and Hulu. On Monday, Hulu started streaming uncut episodes of Sailor Moon— the original anime not the new one coming in a couple months. Anyway, these are UNCUT episodes, so you’re getting all the good stuff. No longer are Neptune and Uranus “cousins”, and Zoisite will remain a dude. Later, the episodes will be available on DVD and Blu-Ray, making my shelf of VHS bootlegs purchased from some dude at the flea market obsolete.

Amusement Parks:

After standing but not operating since 2009, Kentucky Kingdom amusement park re-opens today. The park has changed hands a few times since it originally opened in 1987 and was last under operation by Six Flags. The Six Flags branding is gone and now the new ownership is actually the team that ran it from 1989-1997. The new Lightning Run roller coaster looks pretty amazing.

In Case You Missed It:

On Music Video Monday, Lee took a look at some Michael Jackson music videos since his hologram was out and about.

We also kicked off our X-Men celebrations with 7 X-Men Characters That Won’t be in a Movie Anytime Soon. The article generated a lot of buzz from Dazzler fans! Here’s hoping they will find a place for her in the next movie.

And Linz finished up the week with some Beast and X-Men logo cupcakes along with some day drinking.

As always, be sure to check out The Weekly Links over on Rediscover the 80s for more nostalgia goodness!
