It’s no secret around these parts that I’m a huge SCTV fan. One of my favorite sketches is a commercial for the fictional Poocharee dog food, led by Eugene Levy:
I mean, how can you not love this. It’s so bizarre– the images of Eugene Levy strutting his stuff in his new wave fashions, browsing the supermarket for dog food for his dog (a Borzoi). The background music, the performance… it is everything. How could SCTV even come up with something like this?
I’d appreciated the fake commercial for what it was all these years, but recently learned it was a spoof of a Bonjour Jeans commercial, adding a whole new layer of appreciation to Levy’s delivery:
That dedication to detail really elevated Levy’s work on SCTV for me.
Poochare originally aired July 10, 1981 and is available on the SCTV Volume 1 Network 90 DVD, if you’re looking for more ridiculous goodness to fill your brain with.
As far as I can tell, Bonjour Jeans is still around in Montreal, but you’re probably better off going on Etsy to buy your very own pair of jeans that will rest just below your boobs/moobs.
And finally: this Deadmau5-SCTV Poochare Mashup exists:
What a time to be alive.
