Top Picks from the 2017 Button Draft

Posted by

A couple weeks ago, I got to hang out with Rich and Josh from the Why Are You Listening to This? Podcast as they made their way through Ontario and Montreal visiting pals.

Rich, Linz, and Josh. Canadians for scale.

In our adventures, we of course stopped by a thrift store where we spotted four vases full of retro buttons in the glass case. The jars were taped shut and while we could see some buttons (like the Mac Tonight one I claimed immediately), many of the buttons were a mystery. Josh treated us to the four vases and we went back to my place to participate in the 2017 Button Draft. We took turns picking a button from each pile until we got down to the button snicklefritz.

You can see Josh’s picks on his Instagram. Rich’s, well, use your imagination. He picked up a lot of great McDonald’s ones.

And now, here are some of the highlights of my 2017 Button Draft Picks.

Look, I’m just going to get this nightmare fuel out of the way right now. Bleacher Creature indeed. I don’t know what the Kolts are, but jeezus. E.T. with a nose and his creepy fingers going after that poor pony… I don’t even know what to think. E.T. with a witch/Groucho Marx-type nose is one of the most horrifying things I’ve ever seen. And now I can pin it to my favorite jean jacket and repel everyone with pride.

The heydays of Sears. At least Regina still has pride. I could go for a color T.V. sale, though!

There were a few buttons for a fur trapper convention or something, so I’m assuming this is related to that. I’m not sure you could find a more dated button.

This one is hella faded and I’m not going to lie. I picked this one out only because of Gary from Are You Afraid of the Dark (Ross Hull), who is now a meteorologist.

As a Canadian, I have to defend the whole milk in bags thing (and to be clear, I stick to almond milk so I don’t even deal with that anymore). But milk… on ice? Who is putting ice in their milk? Serious question. Please let me know.

The design on these buttons are what really got me. The color combinations, the shapes– it’s perfect. If I make it to 2023, I’ll be sporting that 40th Birthday one!

Remember those little cardboard milk cartons you’d fill up with change for Unicef? They probably would have got more money out of me if they shoved this great Halloween pin at me. The genericness of this reminds me of the C’est l’halloween song.

Since I started with nightmares, I thought I’d end with this dream– these beautiful McDonald’s buttons. Do they even make Omelette McMuffins anymore? And the holy grail of the Mc D.L.T. might be my favorite, even more so than Mac Tonight, which… wow, a Mac Tonight button makes me feel like I hit the jackpot. Lastly, let your eyes feast upon the old style of McDonald’s cups. Can we get these in plastic for everyday use?

I hope you enjoyed taking a peek at some of these awesome thrift store buttons! I’ll be donating the rejected buttons and those vases back to the thrift store, so if you want our cast-offs, start thriftin’.

Thanks again to Josh and Rich for taking the time to stop by!
