Trailer Crawling: Friday the 13th

Posted by

I have a lot of unusual hobbies.  Some people like to read the latest big novel, while others may prefer to stay up on top-40 music.  Me?  I think I tend to invent hobbies no one else has without realizing it.  Someone recently pointed out to me that one of my regular hobbies is uncommon, so I thought I would share it with the world.  Here goes…

I like movie trailers.  No, not for spoiler moments, not to see if I might like a movie or not, but I like movie trailers because of the marketing story they tell.  How was a film marketed to an audience 30 years ago versus what it has become in pop culture history?  Perhaps, the most interesting way to watch movie trailers is to see each installment in a row for a film franchise that had many sequels, which I call “trailer crawling”.  (This is the part I apparently invented).  I’ve done this with a few franchises, such as Rocky and Home Alone.  It’s even better for franchises you’ve never seen! Recently, I trekked through all the Friday the 13th trailers.  See for yourself how they struggled to come up with new ways to get audiences to see the same story!
