When Television Takes Over

Posted by

When you’re fourteen, you can’t imagine every voluntarily doing homework.  You count down to the second the day you graduate and never have to take on an assignment again.  It’s funny how your perspective can change as you age.  That said, here’s our assignment for this week’s League topic:

“Don’t touch that dial! What shows and/or movies always make you put down the remote when you’re flipping through the channels?”

It doesn’t matter if I’m at home, out of town in a hotel, or at a family holiday party, there’s only one thing that can interrupt an entire evening’s plans without notice: coming across Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory on cable.

I’ve seen the movie six thousand times and have every line memorized.  I even covered my Slugworth theories on before.  So, why does this movie put me in a trance-like state?  Why am I willing to sit through commercials on a movie I own on Blu-Ray?

Perhaps, there’s some nostalgic trigger of my summer routine back in the day.  Growing up, I’d spend a few weeks with the grandparents every some and they only owned two movies, Willy Wonka and Clue.  Was it a Monday?  Wonka.  Oh, it’s Tuesday?  Clue.  Lather, rinse, repeat.

I think it’s hilarious and has a bunch of great one-liners, but I wouldn’t call Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory my favorite movie.  It’s just one of those classic movies that pulls you in every time it’s on TV.

The kind of classic you can’t imagine some people have never seen.

Lee’s love of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is not lost on me. In fact, I’m fully aware of it. He’s not joking about watching it while he’s out of town, either. One time Lee was here, we went to a VHS rental store (this was about 10 years ago). Appalled that I had never watched it, he bought me a copy of Willy Wonka. I still never watched it. It’s probably in one of these boxes somewhere.

vhs-tape-collectionIt may be right on top there, but nope, still not gonna watch it.

Honestly, I don’t know much about the movie, but Willy Wonka always creeped me out. Why does he have a chocolate factory? Why is he murdering children? And most importantly, why won’t his company bring back Hot and Cool Nerds?

Besides, in the time that it takes to watch Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, I could watch something I enjoy better—Bob’s Burgers, The Terminator, or anything starring Rick Moranis.
